In
my 2-D work I combine images of fabrics, letters, old photos, pieces
of nature and more with my computer to create photocollage prints. The
inspiration for these collages can come from the simple color in a leaf
or the look in the eyes of a person in an old photograph. In combining
the elements, I hope to create a finished piece that conveys an atmosphere
and tells an intriguing story. I use the computer as I would use any
other artist’s tool; it allows me to
layer and blend as with a paintbrush. On the computer screen all the different
elements float about enabling me to play with the imagery until I’m
satisfied.
My 3-D works are Box Constructions. These are similar to my collages
in that I piece together various items I find together into small boxes.
Each box is a combination of items such as old tools, toys, jewels, pieces
of wood. . .anything that interests me. I then physically sew, glue and
nail to create a finished piece. I often create the box out of and old
frame combining them with beautiful papers to give texture and pattern
to the piece.
Many of the photographs used in my work were taken
on my trips to Europe, traveling through Italy, France, England and
Africa. The beauty and patina of even the simplest old wall or sculpture
can be the beginning of a piece. Other photographs were taken close
to home on walks through the woods and streets. I find the other pieces
of my work everywhere – from
antique shops and junk shops to old books. . .even my garage. Inspiration
is everywhere and using it to create my work brings me joy.
